On the 8th of April 2019 Msgr Fintan Gavin was introduced to the people of Cork and Ross as their future bishop. He was ordained in the Cathedral in Cork on the 30th of June. At the end of the ordination ceremony our new bishop Fintan spoke of the challenges ahead especially the need to engage young people in the life of the Church and the need to foster vocations in the light of many priests still running parishes well past the retirement age for priests.

Since then our new bishop has been getting to know the diocese and the people of the diocese. The mission of the Church remains the same, of proclaiming the Good News, celebrating the sacraments with the people, building up the faith community and giving people a sense of belonging to that faith community. How that is going to be done in the future is the path that the people of Cork and Ross with Bishop Fintan Gavin will be exploring together.

Change is never easy and can bring about uncertainty and fear. As people of faith we place our trust in the Lord and the guidance of the Holy Spirit. Let us not forget to pray for our Bishop Fintan and the task that lies ahead of him as we move into 2020. The New Year will bring joys and happiness into many lives while others will experience hardship and sorrow. We know that God will be there with us helping and supporting us no matter what we encounter during the year.

I wish you all God’s blessing for the New Year and may it be a happy and peaceful year for you and all your families.
