WORLD MEETING OF FAMILIES ICON: We welcome the World Meeting of Families Pilgrimage of the Icon to our diocese from 22nd February to 5th March. The only venue in Cork city the Icon will be visiting is the North Cathedral. We are inviting everyone to come, pray, venerate the icon and place their prayer petitions in the box. The petitions will be taken to the Poor Clare Convent on College Road where the nuns will pray for all the intentions until they are brought to the closing Mass of the World Meeting of Families celebrated by Pope Francis. The following liturgies are planned during the pilgrimage: Welcome celebration with Bishop Buckley – Thursday 22nd February 7:30pm   Cathedral, Cork. Holy Hour to pray for vocations – Saturday, February 24th at 3pm, Cathedral. Ecumenical Service – Sunday 25th February 3pm,  Cathedral, Cork.

TRÓCAIRE: The theme for this year’s Lenten appeal is Until Love Conquers Fear, Love must win out; it is the only thing that can (Blessed Óscar Romero). Please take a Trócaire Box home with you; these are available on the tables at the back of the church.

OFFERTORY COLLECTION for last weekend (10/11th February) amounted to €1,342, 2nd  collection for Lourdes Invalid Fund came to €945. This weekend (17/18th February) 2nd collection is for the Church Refurbishment Fund; thank you for your continued generosity.

SUNDAY DEVOTIONS: Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament and Rosary will take place in the Little Chapel at the back of the church this Sunday 18th February at 7pm.

MATT TALBOT: The Mass and novena prayers in honour of Matt Talbot will begin this Monday evening, 19th February, at 7.30pm in the Way of the Cross Church, Togher, and will continue for the 6 Mondays of Lent. The Celebrant and preacher this week will be Fr. Peter McVerry, S.J.

Over 60s: Would you like to represent Douglas in the over 60s Talent Competition. Contestants will compete for the Luke Philpott Perpetual Trophy on Wednesday 14th February at 8pm in St Columba’s Hall, Douglas. All are welcome to attend. Tickets: €5.

Cork Alzheimer’s Café a safe space for people with memory problems including Alzheimer’s and other dementias, their carers, family and friends along with social and health professionals to meet. Last Friday of each month 1.30pm to 3.30pm.in Activity Centre, St Finbarr’s Hospital, Douglas Road. Light refreshments provided free of charge. Next meeting will be held on Friday 23rd February.

Make-A-Wish Ireland Annual Wish Day – Volunteers needed. Make-A-Wish Ireland has one simple aim – we grant the wishes of children with life-threatening medical conditions, to bring hope, strength and happiness. Volunteer are needed for WISH DAY, our annual fundraising day, on Friday 9th March 2018. There are a number of ways you could get involved and support us: select a location nearby and volunteer to sell our bands there for the day, hold a coffee morning or bake sale in aid of Make-A-Wish, hold a Jersey Day or a similar themed day in aid of Make-A-Wish  If you can commit to the full day or even a few hours selling our bands, please visit www.makeawish.ie to register online at one of our collection points. PARISH TAX BACK SCHEME: If you pay income tax as a self- employed person or a PAYE worker and you contribute €250 or more in a year to the parish, the parish can claim back on your contributions. This is at no extra cost to you and can be so important to the parish’s income.  All you need to do is ask for a form and a box of envelopes in the sacristy. Please complete the form and we’ll do the rest. Your information is confidential only to the secretary and treasurer of the parish finance committee. For those already in the scheme, your 2018 box of envelopes are available for collection also from the sacristy.

The Irish Cancer Society’s Daffodil Centres (Cork University Hospital and the Bon Secours) are currently looking for volunteers to support cancer patients and their families. Duties will include – welcoming patients and their families into the centre,talking, listening and identifying their needs. Northridge House at St Luke’s Home, Mahon are running a free training programme,  commencing on 20th March, for those on Job Seekers allowance who would wish to work as Professional Carers for the Older Adult. The courses includes QQI Modules and other mandatory Courses. Lourdes 2018–Young Adult Helpers: The Diocese of Cork and Ross invites Young Adults 18-25 year olds to come to Lourdes as helpers from 11th to 16th June. As helpers you will assist with the sick and be involved in the full pilgrimage programme as well as time for prayer, for making new friends and sharing in the story of Lourdes. VOLUNTEER IN AFRICA: Humanitarian Volunteers are looking for volunteers to travel to Kenya on 17 June 2018. The volunteers will work on a humanitarian project for two weeks. No experience required and no age restrictions. Support and  Supervision provided. Volunteers will also visit the resting place of the Venerable Edel Quinn. No large fundraising. Volunteers will pay their own costs. If you can assist teaching English, or assist with sports, games, arts, crafts or more, then you can make a real impact on the lives of the poorest and those without hope. Contact Denis Humanitarian Volunteers 086 8520271.

Douglas & District Cardiac Support Group: Meetings 1st Thursday of each month from September to June, in Lion House, Douglas 11am–1pm.  This group provides support and advice for patients who have had cardiac intervention or treatment in an informal atmosphere with an opportunity to chat and socialise over a cup of tea. The Irish Cancer Society operates a free Volunteer Driver Service that is available to patients attending the following hospitals for chemotherapy treatments; Cork University Hospital, The Mercy University Hospital & South Infirmary Victoria University Hospital. Volunteer drivers will pick a patient up at the door of their home, drop them at the hospital door and then when finished treatment, pick them up and drop them home again. All volunteer expenses are paid. Free DIY Service for Older People: Age Action’s Care & Repair programme is providing DIY work free of charge for older people in Cork. The service has been in operation since 2009 and is expanding year on year as demand grows. To inquire about the Care & Repair service or to request a job, simply call Age Action at their new office on the Model Farm Rd. The new phone number is 021-2067399.  

MASS CARDS: A new selection of Mass cards and other cards are now available in the Parish office. Cost €2 and €3. A new collection of Baptismal candles are also available.
